‘Fat Farmers’ is a rural health initiative started in South Australia by farmers for farmers, to help encourage healthy lifestyles and physical activity.
Farming as a profession and a lifestyle has become increasingly mechanised and overall health outcomes for farmers, and those living in rural communities in general, have suffered.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, half of the people living in regional areas of Australia are not getting enough physical activity.
The World Health Organisation recommends 2.5 to 5 hours each week of moderate intensity exercise or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous intensity exercise.
Fat Farmers, as featured on ABC Landline and ABC News websites recently, aims to address this with group exercise programs designed to improve your health, increase strength and prevent injuries.
There are already over a dozen locations across South Australia and Victoria with Fat Farmers groups, with more locations coming to the Limestone Coast.
Given the challenging season for farmers across the state, now is the perfect time for farmers to take steps to improve their health rain or shine.
Good Country Physiotherapy (GCP) is helping bring Fat Farmers to the Limestone Coast with a group exercise class in Naracoorte led by a physiotherapist initially, and in the near future a personal trainer.
Classes are currently running at the GCP clinic at 157 Smith St, but will be moving to a nearby gym in Naracoorte in coming weeks.
The exercise classes include a whole-body strength and conditioning circuit as well as coaching on technique.
This initiative has been a collaboration between GCP and UniSA Physiotherapy students, with Mason Jones and Tengyue Guo continuing the work of previous students.
Classes run every Friday 7 - 8 AM. The first class is free and costs $10 per class thereafter. All fitness levels are welcome. Anyone interested can call 87621515 to book.
